Three-Legged Dog is a trio of Phoenix-based multi-instrumentalists who play a variety of old-time, early country, bluegrass and blues - Americana, or roots music - on guitar, banjo, mandolin, Dobro, bass, cello, accordion and fiddle.
Their background and influences are individually as diverse as the music they play together.
Ant Bee, classically trained, plays cello and fretless 5-string bass, from time to time picking up an accordion.
Odie Piker, whose background is in rock, is a fine songwriter, moving freely among guitar, mandolin and banjo and taking on most of the lead singing.
Jim Sallis has behind him forty years of country blues and bluegrass, as well as years of playing steel guitar in Texas country bands; with the Dog he plays guitar, Dobro, mandolin, banjo and fiddle.
A typical set may progress from Carter Family songs and a Cajun waltz to a Civil-War original titled "Shiloh," a banjo-cello duet, or a medley of fiddle tunes and nineteenth-century popular tunes - all of it high-energy music.
